Issue 1 Submission Guidelines

Issue Theme:
Late Summer

Issue 1 submissions open on May 2nd at 12:00 PM and close June 22nd at 12:00 AM

The Raspberry accepts submissions from all authors over the age of eighteen currently residing on Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands or in Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver area. We look for pieces within the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and review. Each issue has a specific theme that we kindly ask writers to consider when submitting. We do not accept AI-generated submissions and will not consider content that reflects hate toward marginalized groups, such as people who identify as LGTBQIA2S+, BIPOC, a person with a disability, or a woman.

Submissions we're looking for:

The Window into the Issue:

We look for one poem of 20 lines or less to be published as an epigraph at the beginning of each issue. The selected poem will speak to the themes of the other pieces in the issue, offering readers a view into what will come.

Flash Fiction:

We’re looking for the view out of your window, whether that be about your garden, a sprawling labyrinth, or an alternate universe. We ask you to limit your flash fiction to 500 words or less.

Short Fiction:

Send us your fiction! We ask you to limit your short fiction to 1500 words or less.

Fireside Stories:

We’re looking for your spooky yet cozy stories. Give us something to read as we sit wrapped in a blanket, s’mores in hand, with the forest surrounding us. We ask you to limit your spooky story to 800 words or less.

Creative Nonfiction:

Send us a memoir, a travel journal, a personal essay! We ask you to limit your piece to 1000 words or less.

Unconventional Reviews:

Are there any cafes you favour because of how safe you feel having a panic attack in them? Have you used the same brand of tea for years? Why? How would you review the road conditions of the street you live on? Did you read a book recently that made you question how the world functions? Give us your weird, unfiltered, hyper-specific opinions—the stuff you think no one else is thinking about. We ask you to limit your review to 500 words or less.

Local Recommendations:

Is there a place near you that you’ve recently discovered? A place you’ve been going to for years? Have you been to a wonderful play or concert or art show? Read a book by a local author? Send us your locally focused reviews about something you think needs a little more recognition. We ask you to limit your reviews to 500 words or less.

Editorial Policy:

Our team of editors will work with contributors to refine each accepted piece. We also reserve the right to copyedit for space and clarity.
